Bangladesh has been affected by devastating cyclone “Sidr” that rippled through the country’s southern shoreline. The cyclone that was giant and strongest than any of the previous cyclone tolls not only death of huge numbers of people, but also badly affected and demolished houses, corps, livestock, trees, household stuff, educational institutions etc. The cyclone left its devastating marks on 103 upazilas, 710 unions, affecting 27.45 lakh people of about 8.44 lakh families. The storm also killed millions of live stoke, destroyed corps, and flattened lakhs of houses in the coastal belt of country.

The survivors of the mostly affected areas are now passing there lives in tears losing their belongings and dear ones. More over that, live become unbearable in these areas due to scarcity of food, drinking water, ruined and destroyed shelter etc. Smell of decomposed human being and livestock added cost in worsen the situation. All these may turn the situation towards epidemic of any contagious diseases.

The nation expects any humanitarian efforts on anybody during this disastrous situation of country. A fare amount of support of food, medicine emergency shelter and treatment for the wounded people of cyclone affected areas is urgently needed for saving their lives.

Steps is working in 6 affected districts with 45 NGOs. In these areas total 4776 social actors are working voluntarily since last 5 years to promote gender equality and protect citizen rights in collaboration with local government and service providers.

These volunteers and organizations are ready in these areas to meet any emergency and lend hand towards the affected people.

Steps is taking initiatives for immediate response in these areas through providing emergency relief program to 10,000 affected households in 14 mostly affected Upazilas under 5 Districts. This target is based on Steps survey carried out till 21st November 2007. The survey was carried out though local actors group and local Gender and Development Resource Centers (GDRC).
